Starlink Installation on the Pender Islands

Starlink on the Pender Islands — North and South Pender, linked by bridge, reached by ferry from Swartz Bay. Treed acreages and shoreline lots where Starlink is the primary connection, installed above the canopy in a single visit.

The signal reality on the Pender Islands

The Penders are a two-island ferry community — North and South Pender linked by a single bridge, served by BC Ferries out of Swartz Bay to Otter Bay. Island-wide, the carrier picture is lopsided: of the 2,488 licensed cellular sites on Vancouver Island, Telus holds 2,115, Rogers 250, Bell 18, and other cellular operators 105. A licence doesn't mean there's a tower. On the Penders, coverage hugs the higher ground and the main roads; in the forested folds between — the Magic Lake subdivisions, the South Pender shoreline lots, the shaded valleys under Mount Norman — usable outdoor signal is thin or gone.

The honest baseline: if your lot catches usable signal, a booster may do the job. If the phone is dead at the lot line — the common case in the treed subdivisions — a booster can't create signal, and Starlink becomes the primary connection. The dish doesn't care about carrier footprints. It needs clear sky, which is the hard part under Pender forest.

Terrain and access

Pender geography is forest-first. North Pender's interior is rolling fir and arbutus with lots tucked into the Magic Lake area and along the forested shorelines; South Pender is smaller, more rugged, with the slopes under Mount Norman and rocky shoreline properties. Mature canopy is the norm across both islands, and a ground-level dish here sits under trees — the install plan almost always starts with height: roof peak, gable mast, or a dedicated pole in the clearest patch of the lot. I've spent 10 years in wireless on towers and masts, so a dish going up 30 feet on a windy island ridge is normal work.

Everything comes by ferry — Swartz Bay to Otter Bay — and every install is a single-visit job. We confirm the equipment list and mount plan before the boat, because a second sailing costs a full day. Bedwell Harbour and the water-access stretches of South Pender add a boat leg; we plan those with the tide and the weather, not against them.

What connectivity looks like here

The Penders are the classic Gulf Island connectivity story: beautiful lots, thin infrastructure. Treed subdivisions shadow the carrier signal, valley floors block what's left, and some shoreline properties on South Pender sit in genuine dead pockets. On those lots Starlink isn't a backup — it's the primary pipe, and its performance lives or dies on the obstruction picture. No speed guarantees from us; anyone promising a number is selling something. What we promise is an honest sky-view assessment, a mount built for island winter storms, and network setup inside the house that isn't the bottleneck. The $89 cell signal survey confirms the reality on your lot: book the $89 Starlink survey.

"On the Penders, the survey is worth more than anywhere else I work — because getting it wrong means another ferry day."

Getting work done here

Our residential work — surveys, Starlink installs, boosters, home batteries — runs on a day-trip radius from our Parksville/Qualicum base, and the Penders sit inside it via dedicated ferry days through Swartz Bay (Otter Bay). We confirm the day before, arrive with the full kit on the truck, and finish in one visit — dish mounted, cabling run, obstruction check verified in the app. If weather turns the crossing into a gamble, we reschedule rather than risk your install day. Every mount is winterproofed as standard: properly flashed roof penetrations, rated hardware, and cable runs that won't chafe in a Gulf Island gale.

Our commercial and prime-contractor work — tower builds, maintenance, decommissioning, remote power — covers the full confirmed service region: all of Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast BC, the Southern Gulf Islands (the Penders included), Texada Island, and the Campbell River/Discovery Islands region, including boat-access-only west coast sites.

Pender Islands Starlink questions

My Magic Lake lot is all forest — will Starlink work?

Yes, if the dish can see the sky — which is the whole job on a treed Pender lot. We assess the sky view on the $89 survey and give you the real mount plan (roof peak, mast, or pole) before you buy the kit. A dish under fir and arbutus is an expensive disappointment; a dish above them is the best internet the property has ever had.

Do you cover both North and South Pender?

Yes — the bridge makes it one job zone. North Pender's subdivisions and shoreline lots, South Pender's Mount Norman slopes and waterfront properties, and the water-access stretches near Bedwell Harbour are all covered as single-visit ferry days.

Booster or Starlink on the Penders?

Your phone outside the house decides. Usable outdoor signal → an ISED-certified (RSS-131) signal booster is usually cheaper with lower latency. Dead at the lot line — the common case in the treed subdivisions and dead pockets — a booster has nothing to amplify, and Starlink is the honest answer. The $89 signal survey settles it on-site.

How do ferry-day installs work?

We book the Penders as a dedicated day trip from our mid-Island base, traveling through Swartz Bay to Otter Bay. Everything arrives in one trip — dish, mount hardware, cabling, tools — and the job finishes in a single visit. We confirm the day before and build a weather buffer into the booking.

Do I buy the Starlink kit myself?

Order the kit yourself from Starlink and the warranty stays clean with the account in your name. We handle everything after the box arrives: the assessment, the mount, weather-sealed cable runs, and getting your whole network online. No bundled hardware, no affiliate links — the kit is yours from Starlink.

The Penders run on one ferry day — that's all the job takes

The mount plan is confirmed before the boat, so the trip happens once. Book the $89 survey and get the real plan for your Pender property — credited toward the install if you book within 30 days.
