Starlink Installation in the Discovery Islands

Yachts at anchor, waterfront lodges, island cabins with no road and no cell signal — the stretch of water between Campbell River and Desolation Sound is some of the most disconnected cruising ground in BC. Starlink changes that, installed properly.

The signal reality in the Discovery Islands

Of the 2,488 licensed cellular sites on Vancouver Island, the overwhelming majority cluster around population centres — Telus holds 2,115, Rogers 250, Bell 18, and other cellular operators 105. A licence doesn't mean there's a tower. Once you're past Campbell River and into the Discovery Islands, coverage thins to almost nothing: the water, the terrain, and the sheer lack of population mean the carriers never built here and never will. A full cell-site build runs about $1M CAD — nobody spends that for an anchorage.

This is why Starlink owns this region. Not as a backup — as the connection. Yachts working Desolation Sound, lodges on the outer islands, cabins you reach by boat: the dish is the only pipe to the world, which means the install has to be right the first time. There's no driving back tomorrow.

Boats, lodges, and shore properties

"Up here the install has to be right the first time. There's no driving back tomorrow."

Yachts get the marine treatment: proper mounts (arch, stern rail, or dedicated mast — assessed per vessel), 12V power integration with honest amp-hour math, and cable runs built for motion and salt. See marine Starlink for the full service.

Lodges and shore properties get the land treatment adapted for boat access: obstruction assessment (the forest is the enemy here too), mounts that survive coastal wind, and power sizing for off-grid systems. Everything arrives by water in one trip — we plan the logistics, not improvise them.

Why is there no cell service out here?

Carriers build where the customers are. A full cell-site build runs about $1M CAD, and the economics of an anchorage or a ten-cabin island don't come close. The terrain and water finish the job — signal doesn't bend around islands. Starlink skips the whole problem by going straight up.

Getting work done here

Our commercial and prime-contractor work already covers the Campbell River/Discovery Islands region including boat-access-only sites — towers, remote power, marine installs. Residential Starlink work up here runs as dedicated trips: we confirm the vessel or property details in advance, arrive with the full kit, and finish in one visit. The $89 survey becomes a vessel or property assessment — mounting, power, routing, and a real quote.

Common questions

Can you install on a boat at anchor?

Yes — that's half the work up here. We meet the vessel at anchor or at the dock in Gorge Harbour, Heriot Bay, or your home marina. Marine installs get proper mounts and 12V power integration, not a dish zip-tied to the rail. See our marine Starlink service for the full picture.

What about properties with no road access?

Normal for the Discovery Islands. We travel by water — the install is planned around boat access, and everything arrives in one trip. Our commercial work already covers boat-access sites across the region, so the logistics are familiar, not improvised.

Is there any cell signal to fall back on?

In most of the Discovery Islands, no — that's why you're reading this page. Island-wide there are 2,488 licensed cellular sites, and a licence doesn't mean there's a tower; coverage clusters around Campbell River and thins fast once you're on the water. Starlink is usually the primary connection here, not the backup.

How do we handle power for the dish off-grid?

A Starlink dish is a real electrical load, and off-grid properties feel it. We size the power side honestly — if your solar and battery bank can't carry the dish through a cloudy week, we'll tell you before the mount goes on, and we can scope the battery bank to match.

On the water with no signal?

$89 vessel or property assessment — mounting, power, and routing scoped on your actual boat or property, quoted honestly. One trip, done right.
